About
Hello, and welcome!
I'm Kirsty, an abstract painter living near the edge of the Peak District in Greater Manchester.
My work is primarily an attempt to record feelings and relationships. Some depict my reaction and relationship to landscapes, others will represent experiences and people.
I often try to capture feelings through line or symbol and I'm fascinated in creating textural surfaces. I explore these textures and colour with a continual process of applying and removing paint and materials, in order to reveal the history of previous layers. After a few layers the work appears to take on a life of its own with character and history and I allow it to lead me.
Over the years, painting has become my refuge and a chance to rediscover myself after becoming a mother and being a primary teacher/ SENDCO for over 20 years. Creating the abstract worlds on my boards has been powerful and uplifting experience. My hope is that my final pieces provide a thought-provoking escape for the viewer a space to discover their own responses and some beauty.
About me ...
Born in south Manchester. My love for art started as a child, and has always been my favourite pastime, so it was a natural progression for me to study art beyond school. I went to Art college and then on to graduate with an Embroidery degree from Manchester Metropolitan University in 1999. Since then, I used my creativity within my primary teaching profession with a particular interest in helping children to express themselves through art.
In recent years I started craving more of a personal creative outlet and my passion for painting was reignited! I haven’t stopped since. I currently balance teaching part time with my art practice.
I feel incredibly lucky to share a studio space in an old mill close to home. This allows me the space I need (both mentally and physically!) to take my practice further.
It's hard to me to express my love for painting. Hours and days disappear and worries vanish, when I'm in the studio. Being covered in paint with the freedom to play are my happiest moments.
I would love for you to join me on this journey. Follow along with my regular posts on Instagram, sign up to my newsletter or send me an email to ask any questions or just get in touch.
Thank you for visiting my website,
